Sizing a furnace for this county starts with understanding what the burner and heat exchanger are actually being asked to carry. Homes in Yellowstone County, MT run heat about nine months a year, from September through May. A system that is undersized or has leaky duct connections cycles harder and more often to hold temperature, and the heat exchanger absorbs that extra stress across every one of those months. A contractor quoting a new furnace here has to run a proper load calculation for this house, this envelope, and this exposure before anything goes on an order form.

Ductwork sized for an earlier generation of heating equipment does not automatically carry what a new furnace needs. Half the homes in Yellowstone County, Montana were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That means a contractor quoting a furnace replacement has to assess the existing duct system, not just the unit going in: trunk dimensions, branch runs, and whether the static pressure the old layout was built for matches what a new system will push through it. If it does not, the duct work is part of the job. The electrical service gets the same look, since load requirements have shifted along with equipment design.

What Gets Installed With a New Furnace

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing an interior furnace unit, ductwork, and a flue pipe extending through the roof.

The furnace itself sits in a utility room, basement, or closet at the center of the home's heating setup. A burner inside it ignites fuel, and a heat exchanger transfers that warmth to the air moving through the system. The blower motor pushes that heated air out through the supply side of the duct system.

The flue pipe runs from the furnace up and out of the house, carrying combustion gases away. Alongside it, the thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner direct control over when the furnace fires and at what target temperature. The contractor also fits the filter housing where the return air re-enters the unit before the cycle repeats.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house based on what they find on site.
